ONE OF THE most important pieces of Mughal jewellery ever seen on the market is being offered for sale at BONHAMS. Suspended from a gold and cream woven cord, the jewellery boasts the largest-known set of flat diamonds from MUGHAL INDIA. The early 17th century Mughal Mirror Diamond necklace has an asking price of US$20m.

In the 16th and 17th centuries the colourless rough diamonds discovered in the Golconda mines in India were reserved for ROYALTY. It is most likely that the diamonds belonged to a Mughal emperor. Indians had held these diamonds in high esteem for centuries, admiring their exceptional hardness and beauty of the crystal form.
Matthew Girling, chief executive of Bonham’s for Europe, said the piece was far more than just a necklace. Mr Girling added that a necklace of such BEAUTY and RARITY would be a worthy addition to a museum. ”It is MUSEUM quality without a doubt and I would be surprised if it ever gets worn again,” he said. ”It would be nice if it could be seen by many people so it would be wonderful if a museum were to buy it.”
